일본의 카레이서인 오리도 마나부(사진, 39세)가 시보레 라세티를 타고 FIA WTCC에 참가한다.
시보레와 오리도 마나부 선수의 공식 사이트에 의하면 지난 8월 31일, 시보레유럽지사는 영문 보도자료를 통해 오리도 마나부가 4번째 라세티를 타고 시보레 팀 레이서로 참가하며 이탈리아 몬자 서킷에서 10월 4, 5일에 열리는 WTCC 제 19전, 20전에 시보레 라세티로 데뷔한다.
이번 그의 데뷔는 이미 지난 2006년, 요코하마 타이어가 WTCC에 타이어를 제공하는 시점부터 계속 추진되었던 것으로 동시에 2008년 WTCC 경기 목록에 일본 오카야마 경기가 추가되면서 더욱 탄력을 받게 되었다.
치바현 출신으로 1992년 후지 신인전을 통해 데뷔한 그는 1995년 일본의 실비아 원 메이크 전인 전일본 슈퍼실비아 챔피언십에서 우승하면서 두각을 드러냈으며 이후 JGTC(All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship, 현 Super GT), 토카치 24시간 내구 레이스에 나가는 등 레이서로 방향을 넓혔다.
전 일본 드리프트 챔피언십(D1 그랑프리)에도 심사 위원(이후 선수로 참전하기도 했음)으로 나섰던 그는 지난 2005년 초대 D1 그랑프리 챔피언인 다니구치 노부테루 선수와 함께 요코하마 타이어의 초청으로 한국을 방문해 국내 팬들에게 드리프트 시범을 보여줬으며 2004년 르망 24시간 GT 클래스에 쵸로Q 레이싱팀으로 참전, 종합 12위 및 클래스 2위에 오르기도 했다.
2005년 스즈카 전 이후 슈퍼 GT에서 좋은 성적을 내지 못한 오리도는 올해 Super GT GT300 클래스에 Racing Project Bandoh 소속으로 렉서스 IS350(그 이전에는 도요타 셀리카)를 타고 참전하고 있으며 지난 7월 오토폴리스에서 열린 경주에서 예선 1위를 차지했다.(2008년 현재 그의 순위는 14위)
고단샤의 비디오 프로그램인 베스트 모터링이나 핫 버젼, 산요서방의 비디오 옵션이나 드리프트 천국에 자주 등장하기도 한다.

JAPANESE DRIVER MANABU ORIDO JOINS CHEVROLET
Will Drive Fourth Chevrolet Lacetti In Monza, Okayama, Macau
OSCHERSLEBEN, 31st August 2008 – The Chevrolet brand will expand its presence in the WTCC to four cars when Japanese driver Manabu “Max” Orido joins the championship for the final three rounds of the 2008 season. Orido will make his debut at the last European race in Monza, before continuing at his home race in Okayama and the WTCC finale at the Macau street track. The Japanese driver will be run by Chevrolet Motorsport Sweden.
Orido (39) started his career in the 1992 Fuji Freshman series, which he won at his first attempt. In 1995 he became the Japanese Super Silvia Champion, winning his class in the Tokachi 24 Hours the following year. Since then he is a regular in the Japanese GT Championship, notably finishing second in the 2001 Macau GP when that year the Japanese championship had its finale race at the former Portuguese enclave. He also won JGTC races in 2003 and ’05, and finished second in class at the 2004 Le Mans 24 Hours. As such, he is quite familiar with the Okayama and Macau race tracks. Orido also raced in NASCAR when the American series visited Japan in 1999 and he is one of Japan’s drifting champions, an immensely popular motor racing spin-off discipline.
The fourth Chevrolet Lacetti entered in the last three races is the Chevrolet Motorsport Sweden car Tomas Schie normally drives in the Swedish Touring Car Championship.
“It is an honour to be the first Japanese driver in the history of the WTCC,” Manabu Orido said. “I would like to thank all those who made this happen for me. I hope that my presence in one of the three official FIA World Championships will help the series gain in popularity in Japan, especially so for the Okayama round in October. Hopefully my knowledge of the Okayama track, which is new to the WTCC calendar, can benefit the other three Chevrolet drivers and help them in their races.”
